A product described as plant-based may seem like an easy choice, especially when the front of the package highlights grains, fruit, or botanicals. But a front-label phrase is only one piece of information. To assess whether the product matches your vegan choices, check the full ingredient statement and the source of any claim.
Look beyond the front
“Plant-based” can emphasize plant ingredients without spelling out every ingredient’s origin or making a clear statement about animal-derived components. The exact meaning can depend on how the maker uses the phrase. Avoid reading it as a guarantee when the package does not explain what it covers.
Turn to the complete ingredient list and look for terms you recognize, including clearly animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax or lanolin where relevant. If a name is ambiguous, the list may not resolve its source. In that case, check the maker’s product-specific information rather than relying on the front-panel imagery.
Match evidence to the claim
Separate a description of ingredients from a certification claim. If a package refers to certification, identify the program responsible and look for information from that source about the product or product range. If the company makes a vegan claim without naming a certification, assess it as the company’s claim and look for supporting details.
A practical check does not require certainty where the available information cannot provide it. Note what the label says, what the manufacturer confirms, and what remains unanswered. You can then make a choice based on evidence you can actually find, rather than on the impression created by a green package or a botanical image.
